Madina Sharif, also known as Madinah al-Munawwarah , is one of the most sacred and beloved cities in Islam. Situated in the western region of Saudi Arabia, around 400 kilometers north of Makkah, this blessed city holds a unique place in the hearts of more than a billion Muslims around the world. It is not only the city of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ but also a city of love, brotherhood, peace, and spirituality. Every corner of Madina tells stories of sacrifice, faith, and divine blessings.
The Historical Background:
Before the arrival of Islam, Madina was known as Yathrib, a place surrounded by volcanic mountains and date-palm groves. It was home to several Arab and Jewish tribes. The city transformed completely after the Hijrat (migration) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madina in 622 CE, an event that marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
The Prophet ﷺ was warmly welcomed by the people of Yathrib, who later became known as the Helpers, while his followers who migrated from Makkah were called the Muhajir (Emigrants). Together, they built a new community based on faith, equality, and justice. From that moment, Yathrib became Madinah al-Munawwarah, “The Enlightened City.” or the city of Lights .
Masjid an-Nabawi:
The heart of Madina is the Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque, which was originally built by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself with the help of his companions shortly after his arrival in madina . It started as a simple structure made of mud walls and palm-tree trunks, but today it stands as one of the largest and most Glorious mosques in the world.
At the center of the mosque lies the most sacred area known as Ar-Rawdah ash-Shareefah (The Noble Garden) that is the space between the Prophet’s blessed house and his pulpit. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Between my house and my pulpit is a garden from the gardens of Paradise.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Within Masjid an-Nabawi is the Rauza Mubarak, the resting place of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, along with his two close companions, Hazrat Abu Bakr Sadique (RA) and Hazrat Umar ibn Khattab (RA). Visiting this blessed place fills the hearts of believers with deep love and Contentment.
